Carved Table for U.S.S. California Submarine

USS California (SSN 781) Chiefs in front of the WWII Submarine Memorial in Groton, CT. (U.S. Navy Photo by John Narewski)

One of our Navy’s sub bases is not too far from here, and the Chief of the U.S.S. California Submarine dropped off a large slab of California Redwood ($500 on Ebay) and requested the ships logo be carved into the surface. Being from New England, I’ve never had the opportunity to carve Redwood. All the carvers on the West coast carve it all the time and I’ve heard nothing but great things about it. It was really nice to carve, soft but tight grain to hold detail. Great wood.

He provided the logo…

I added the ribbon…

and then created the layout…

The CNC carved the shapes and text. All the textures and forms were then hand carved with small power carving tools. It was finished with 3 coats of gloss polyurethane at the Chief’s request.

Thankfully, the Chief was thrilled and showed it off at a large Navy banquet.

Carved Magnolia Sign

This sign was designed by a sign company down south called Franklin Sign Company in Tennessee, http://www.franklinsignco.com They contacted me to see if I could create the magnolias for this double sided sign. They sent me the design layout and the sizes and the magnolia image they wanted transformed into 3D. I was able to take it from there.

The first step was to have the CNC cut out the two profiles in 1.5″ thick sign foam. Then, with a pencil, draw the detail lines of all the leaves and petals.

Next, using a dremel with a tear drop burr bit and a long thin burr bit, begin carving in on all the lines.

Once, the carving was complete, they were ready for priming and painting…

I will update this post with the final picture of the completed sign as soon as they send it to me.

Praise Yahweh, the Creator God, who thought of the Magnolia’s beautiful design.

3D “Desert Grows” Restaurant Sign

This customer was opening a restaurant in New Mexico and provided the following logo…

I suggested some changes to the logo to make it read better. They made some changes and sent this new design…

NEWEST LOGO SMALL

Much improved I thought. I made a few minor adjustments to the layout to fit the sign construction and for readability and began making the transfer to 3D production…
